BLENDED LEARNING COURSES – ONLINE COMPONENT

If a participant has not completed the online training prior to the in-class start date then the participant will not be eligible to attend the in-class session.  There are no refunds or transfers for ANY failure to complete the online portion prior to the course date. Once an online course has been successfully booked, the sale is considered FINAL once the online access has been issued to the participant(s).

Participants must bring either a printed copy or digital copy (PDF, etc.) of the online completion certificate to the in-class session for the instructor to verify.

Cancellations, Short Notice Rescheduling, or failure to attend a course made LESS THAN 4 business days will not be refunded. The Client must pay for their course prior to selecting a new course date. When you book a course, your place is reserved for YOU.  We require a minimum of 48 HOURS NOTICE for ANY CANCELLATIONS in order to obtain a full refund.  We will always work with you and try to find you another public course date if space is available.  An Administration Fee of $25.00 applies to ANY rescheduled course less than 48 hours from the course date.

The Canadian Red Cross has standards of training surrounding each first aid course. The level of instruction you need will determine the time of each course. For example, a person who is learning CPR for adults only will be fewer hours than a health care provider who needs to learn CPR for adults, children, and babies using a BVM. Please review the guidelines for each course or contact us directly for further details.

CPR- Levels A, C, or HCP
The CPR course is approximately 4-6 hours depending on the level you choose.  For instance, Level A is approximately 4 hours and the health care provider level is 6 hours.

EFA with CPR- Levels A, C, or HCP
The Emergency First Aid course level A is approximately 6.5 hours and the Level HCP course is 8 hours.

SFA with  CPR- Levels A, C, or HCP
The Standard First Aid course is between 14 and 16 hours, depending on the level you choose. Level A or C is closer to 14 hours whereas level HCP is closer to 16.

Day 1 Training

• CPR Level A, C or HCP with AED is held approximately 9 am – 3 pm (4-6 hours)
• Emergency First Aid with CPR is approximately  9 am – 5 pm (6.5 – 8 hours)
• Standard First Aid with CPR – Part One/Day One is approximately 9 am  – 5 pm (6.5 – 8 hours)

Day 2 Training

• Standard First Aid Part Two/Day Two is approximately 9 am  – 5 pm (6.5 – 8 hours)

Blended Learning Standard First Aid Training 

• Standard First Aid Part One online is approximately 6-8 hours depending on your learning pace
• Standard First Aid Part Two is held in a classroom setting and is approximately 6.5-8 hours depending on your level of certification

CPR Level A is a course designed to deliver choking, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, and automated external defibrillation on adults. Those who need to know how to assist with respiratory, choking, or cardiac emergencies affecting individuals older than eight years of age should take this course. The course is intended for layperson rescuers, workplace safety teams, security guards, line workers or factory workers who only work with adults, etc. NOTE: this course cannot be recertified. Participant must take full course each time.

CPR LEVEL A Requirements: • The Red Cross • Responding to Emergencies • Check, Call, Care • Recovery position • Choking – adult • Assisting with medications • Angina and heart attack • Stroke • CPR and AED– adult • Deadly bleeding

Level CPR C builds on the fundamentals of Level A expanding to include CPR and choking techniques for children, and infants.

This level of training also includes two-person CPR for adult, children and infants (0-12months). Level C is often a workplace requirement for first aiders responding to respiratory or cardiac emergencies affecting persons in diverse age groups. The course is intended for layperson rescuers, workplace safety teams, lifeguards, firefighters, police, personal support workers, public volunteers, teachers, daycare providers, security guards, and other groups. NOTE: This course can be recertified every 3 years.

Level C Requirements: • Level A content • Choking – child and baby • CPR and AED – child and baby Includes any other material required by specific legislation

CPR Level HCP builds on both Level A and Level C for CPR and choking techniques for adult, child, and babies but at a Health Care Provider level. This course includes advanced circulation checks, rescue breathing, and the use of a bag valve mask (BVM). The course is intended for doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, first responders, emergency medical responders, and allied Health Care Professionals (RT, OT, PT, etc.). Some PSW’s require this training certification level as do Paramedic or Firefighter students; student volunteers or those on placement, where they may find themselves in a hospital or clinic, or working in a medical or team based environment. NOTE: This course is recerifiable every 3 years but your workplace may require it annually.

LEVEL HCP Requirements: • The Red Cross • Responding to Emergencies • Check, Call, Care • Recovery position • Choking – adult, child and baby • Assisting with medications • Angina and heart attack • Stroke • One-rescuer CPR and AED– adult, child and baby • Deadly bleeding • Jaw Thrust • Pulse check • Rescue breathing – adult, child and baby • BVM – adult, child and baby • Two-rescuer CPR and AED – adult, child and baby

Workplace safety is non-negotiable.  There is no minimum number of employees under which a company can be exempt from Regulation 1101.  It applies to all businesses, big and small. The law that covers workplace safety and insurance in Ontario includes a section (regulation) which outlines what first aid employers must provide. Called Regulation 1101 – First Aid Requirements, it applies to all employers governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

All employers who are subject to the Occupational Health and Safety Act must comply with Regulation 1101 under Section 3 of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act for first aid requirements.

Employers with 6 to 15 employees
If you are an employer with 1 to 5 employees, then a “first aid station shall be in the charge of a worker who works in the immediate vicinity of the first aid station and who is qualified in first aid to the standards required by [the] Regulation.” This certified and qualified employee must have immediate access, at all times, to the first aid kit in their work area which holds specific items as listed in Regulation 1101. This kit is known as an Ontario Section 8 First Aid Kit.

Employers with 6 to 15 employees
If you are an employer with 6 to 15 employees then the trained employee must have Standard First Aid certificate and must work in the immediate area of first aid kit that contains the specific supplies as listed in the regulation and is known as an Ontario Section 9 First Aid Kit.

Employers with 16 to 200 employees
If you are an employer with 16 to 200 employees then he trained person must have a Standard First Aid certificate and have immediate access to a first aid kit known as an Ontario section 10 First Aid kit. There must also be a stretcher and two blankets at the worksite.

Employers with more than 200 employees
If the employer has over 200 employees then the employer must provide a first aid room in addition to the required Ontario section 10 First Aid kits at each work area. This room must be in the charge of a registered nurse, or a worker holding a Standard First Aid Certificate, or its equivalent, and who does not perform other work of a nature that is likely to affect adversely his/her ability to administer first aid.

Basic First Aid is often the equivalent of the Red Cross Emergency First Aid CPR Course. Depending on the job posting and position, you may only need Emergency First Aid Level A. This is common for security guards or volunteers who work with adults only.  If you work with children or babies, you will need to take the Emergency First Aid Level C course to meet your workplace requirements.  Depending on the position, you may be expected to take the Standard First Aid course (level A or C).  When in doubt, give us a call and we will help you select the course best suited for your new position.

December 214 the Childcare Modernization Act, 2014, was passed by the Ontario Legislature and received by Royal Assent. This new Childcare Act will replace the Daycare Nurseries Act with a new Childcare Early Years Act, 2014. The new Childcare Modernization Act, 2014 will be proclaimed on August 31, 2015.

Essentially, the new Childcare Modernization Act, 2014 upholds and enforces that anyone working in a daycare setting, whether it’s the childcare provider or the daycare chef, requires certification at Standard First Aid level C.

• Resource Teacher: valid certification in Standard First Aid, including infant and child CPR (level C)
• Staff Training and Development: valid certification in Standard First Aid, including infant and child CPR (level C)

First question I ask this participant is… Do you have a physical card in your hand? It is always important to get a copy of the certification training level that you are signed off on. The card should issue the instructors name, date and the course date. The card should be supported by a regulating body such as Red Cross or St. Johns. I highly recommend that you insist to your gym teacher or course facilitator to provide you with a temporary card until your permanent card is issued. You need documentation verifying you passed your Skills Checks/Sign Offs and achieved a minimum 75% passing grade on written testing. Any qualified, prepared Instructor should complete your hands on Sign Offs and verify your attendance, provide documentation on pass/fail, and some may issue a temporary certificate or card, or card of attendance, and issue a receipt of purchase. Not every instructor has access to this during weekends or special holidays, but their designated Training Partner should be able to follow this up with you, reasonably, within 48 hours.

No. You need to recertify BEFORE your expiration date. Not all cards are recertifiable.

The Red Cross Program Standards &Guidelines, and WSIB Workplace guidelines dictate your course learning outcomes. These times are mandatory and expected of all participants. To attend a course that is less than the mandatory outcomes may render your certificate void/invalid, and therefore, require additional training. My advice is to plan to be there and attend the full training time. I advise all of my students to plan to be in class, ready and present, from 9am to 5pm each day for a regular daytime training session.

COURSE HOURS:

• Standard First Aid Level A to HCP – 14-16 hours
• Emergency First Aid Level A to HCP – 6.5 to 8 hours
• CPR Level A or HCP – 4 to 6 hours
• Blended Learning Standard First Aid – 6.5 to 8 hours online with 6.5 to 8 hours in class

You need standard first aid level C. If you are a firefighter or Paramedic I HIGHLY recommend taking the training at the HCP level, and therefore recertifying each semester as you go. You will need this course eventually and taking it at the onset makes more sense than doing the full course later. At Baxter Safety, we will provide this training at the full level or recert level to ensure you are qualified and meet your application requirements.

I highly recommend the Standard First Aid Level HCP course. You will need to carry O2, BVM and work in teams. The initial application may ask you to have SFA level C, but I recommend HCP as it will be the course you need to be covered under the University or college guidelines.
